As old texts and historians say… the celebration of New Year started on the day after Diwali, sometime in 1818, in the first half of 19th century. It was an assertion by Gujarati traders over Arab monopoly on paper trade.
As Arabs brought paper to Gujarat and set up indigenous paper making units in the 15th century, the first widespread use of paper came in the form of account books. It was here that Gujarati traders made their presence felt as Hindus by inscribing account books with ‘Shree Laabh’ on the first day of the year according to ‘Vikram Samvat.’
However, they adopted the use of ‘Saal Mubarak’ (a Persian phrase) as New Year’s greeting to express communal harmony. In their own words, Gujaratis wish each other saying “સાલ મુબારક”
Gujarat New Year is regarded as a highly fortunate day!!
People at Gujarati New Year celebrations don new clothing, go to temples, and visit with friends and family.
The entire state of Gujarat celebrates the Gujarat New Year with immense pleasure, happiness, and fervour.
