Happy Republic Day – 75th Year in being

We, Indians are celebrating India’s 75th Republic Day today. ie. 26-January-2024

Today’s Kartavya Path parade highlights various tableaus that show India’s rich tradition, cultural heritage, spectacles of the nation’s progress and achievements and also airshows by the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.

Dr BR Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, had said, “Constitution is not a mere lawyers document, it is a vehicle of life and its spirit is always the spirit of Age” and to commemorate the adoption of this constitution of our country’ in 1950. Hence, the celebration of republic day.

The erstwhile govt’s motive for picking 26 January as Indian Republic Day is that on this very day in 1929, the statement of Indian Independence was declared (Purna Swaraj) by the Indian National Congress. The newly independent Constituent Assembly of India concluded the Constitution of India on 26 November 1949, under supervision of Dr. B R Ambedkar. Hence, this glorious act came into influence on 26 January 1950.

We should remember that the Constitution of India is a colossal record, which sets down techniques, powers, obligations, central privileges and order standards of the Public authority of India and Indian residents. The main rule of the Indian Constitution is “Of the people, For the people and By the people”; it signifies the power possession of the residents of India.

Republic Day denotes the celebration of the strengthening of Indian residents to choose their government. It is a public holiday which remembers the course of the foundation of the Indian Constitution.

Never Forget Our Heroes, who sacrificed their lives for India,
to bring up this glorious day, Happy Republic Day!!

Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, Pongal, Lohri, Bihu

India has always been a land of diverse cultural identities. Every culture has its own festivals which are of great significance. A few such festivals like Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal and Magh Bihu are celebrated in the month of January. Each of them has its own history and significance.

Lohri:

Lohri is an Indian festival of great traditional significance. It is celebrated a day before Makar Sankranti, where people pray and celebrate around a bonfire. The festival is primarily celebrated in the northern parts of India with great energy and spirit. It is also known as the ‘festival of harvest’, wherein farmers celebrate singing folk songs and mark the end of the sowing season.

Tales from Punjab mention the legend of Dulla Bhatti, a hero who led a rebellion against the Mughal Empire. His acts of bravery made him so famous in Punjab that almost every Lohri song mentions his name.

Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, Pongal, Lohri, and Magh Bihu in 2024

Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan:

Makar Sankranti, also known as Maghi, is a Hindu festival which is celebrated across India in different cultural forms with great devotion and fervour. The festival marks the start of longer days and is usually celebrated in the second week of January. This festival marks the end of the winter and the start of longer days.

It is known by various names in different parts of the country. In Gujarat, it is also known as Uttarayan, the kite-flying festival. An all-mashed-up vegetable dish called ‘Undhiyo’ is prepared as part of the festivities, which also include bonfires, kite flying, and feasts.

Pongal:

Originated as a Dravidian harvest festival, which was celebrated as Thai Un and Thai Niradal, the history of Pongal dates back to around 2000 years.

Makar Sankranti is followed by Pongal, which is a four-day-long harvest festival celebrated in India and is associated with the tradition of crop harvesting. This festival usually falls in the month of January, when crops like rice, turmeric, and sugarcane are harvested. The festival is widely celebrated in Tamil Nadu.

This year, Pongal will be celebrated from January 14 to January 17, 2024.

According to a legend, Lord Shiva once asked his bull, Basava, to go to the earth and ask humans to have an oil massage and bath every day and to eat once a month. Basava mistakenly announced that Shiva has asked people to eat daily and have an oil massage and bath once a month. Enraged, Shiva banished Bavasa to live on earth forever. He would have to plough the fields to help people produce more food. Thus, this day is associated with cattle.

Bihu:

Magh Bihu is when the annual harvest takes place in Assam. People celebrate Rongali Bihu to mark the beginning of the Assamese New Year and the end of the harvest season.

Indian culture has its own festivals that have great significance in our lives. Be it freshness of Pongal, the fire of Lohri, the fervor of Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti, and festivity of Bihu.

May the spirit of festivals unite us in a happy, humble, and human way.
