May 1 is globally celebrated as International Labour Day, dedicated to recognizing the struggles and contributions of the working class. Originating from movements in America and Chicago advocating for an eight-hour workday, it evolved into a day for workers’ rights worldwide.
International Labour Day serves as an annual reminder to acknowledge the challenges and contributions of workers and the working class.
History
The roots of International Labour Day trace back to the events of 1886 in America, where laborers demanded an eight-hour workday. The peaceful demonstration escalated into violence, culminating in what became known as The Haymarket Affair, marking the inception of International Labour Day.
Subsequently, in 1889, various socialist parties in Europe united to designate May 1st as International Labour Day, a tradition upheld annually since then.
Significance
International Labour Day serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions made by laborers and the working class to societal and national development. It emphasizes the importance of laborers understanding their rights, as they often face exploitation.
By empowering laborers with knowledge of their rights, the day aims to foster better working and living conditions for workers, urging collective action towards their improvement.

May 1 is celebrated as Maharashtra Day, Gujarat Foundation Day and International Workers’ Day. Two states of India, Maharashtra and Gujarat, celebrate their foundation day today.
About 63 years ago, the foundation of both the states was laid. The two states were formed on this day in 1960 after the division of the erstwhile state of Bombay.
How did Gujarat and Maharashtra become separate states?
Both the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra were part of Bombay Province before and for some time after independence. At that time the number of people speaking Marathi and Gujarati was highest. Due to language-wise regionalisation, both demanded a separate state.
The Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and the Maha Gujarat Movement became the face of these demands. Given the momentum of protests in different corners of the state, the Government of India decided to frame the Bombay Reorganization Act. After its passage in Parliament, Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat. On May 1, 1960, Gujarat and Maharashtra were declared as two separate states.
How is this day celebrated in Gujarat and Maharashtra?
The day is celebrated with many parades, events and celebrations in Maharashtra and Gujarat. In Maharashtra, the main ceremony is held at Shivaji Park in Dadar. Whereas in Gujarat the main event is organized at Sabarmati Riverfront. These events highlight the culture and traditions of both the states. This day is declared a public holiday in Maharashtra.

Amidst the joyous chants of “Jai Shri Ram” or “Jai Siya Ram” resonating through the air, the anticipation of our Lord’s birth anniversary fills our hearts. However, Ram Navami 2024 holds an even more profound significance as it witnesses the celestial presence of Ram Lalla gracing the sacred Ayodhya’s Ram Janma Bhoomi within the newly constructed Ayodhya Mandir.
Ram Navami transcends the confines of a mere date on the calendar; it embodies an emotion that courses through the veins of every devout soul. From the serene streets of Ram Kshetra Ayodhya to the bustling corners of India, a symphony of devotion reverberates across the nation.
Story of Ram Navami
A cornerstone of Hindu literature is the epic Ramayan, which narrates the tale of Ram, a prince renowned for his courage, devotion, and unwavering adherence to Dharma (righteous duty). Born in glorious kingdom of Ayodhya, Ram was the eldest son of King Dashrath.
A night before he was crowned to be Prince of Ayodhya, Destiny had other plans. With certain series of twisting events, Ram was exiled to the forest for fourteen years, along with his devoted wife, Sita, and his loyal brother Lakshman.
Ram, Sita, and Lakshman in the forest faced numerous challenges, showcasing their strength and resilience. One importance and life-changing instance was the demon king Ravan’s abduction of Sita. Unwavering in his determination to rescue his wife, Ram embarked on a legendary journey, forging alliances and overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles. This period of exile and the epic battle against Ravana forms the core of the Ramayana and serve as a testament to Ram’s unwavering commitment to his ideals.
After a fierce battle, finally Ram emerged victorious, rescuing Sita and restoring Dharma to the land. Their triumphant return to Ayodhya marked the beginning of Ram’s reign, a period of peace and prosperity. Ram Navami celebrates the birth of this embodiment of righteousness, a prince whose life became a benchmark for generations to come.
