The day was 11th September, 1893. A young indian youth drapped with saffron robes was standing on the podium of World Religion Conference in Chicago, said “Sisters and Brothers of America”.. bringing a thunderous applause from the audience.
Swami Vivekananda’s iconic speech at the World Religion Conference in Chicago is remembered by one and all. The speech, that day, was full of wisdom.
For those unversed, it is in this iconic chicago speech of Swami Vivekananda blew everyone’s mind. He mentioned the basic, yet most important things that one should follow in life.
These things included being patriotic, loving all religions, analysing religion, being acquainted with science, knowing importance and necessity of rituals, being aware of roots of Hinduism, being aware of the goal of science, being aware of the cause of downfall of India, and being against religious conversations.
Since 1985, the Indian government has recognised January 12 as National Youth Day, the anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s birth. It was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth.
It is the day to mark the contribution of youth to the society. The day is also about encouraging the youth to persevere and achieve greater goals in life. If the youth of the country dedicate themselves to greater good, the country is bound to grow further.
“My hope of the future lies in the youths of character, intelligent, renouncing all for the service of others, and obedient – good to themselves and the country at large.”
